Verse (Roman transliteration)
Translation
The body has become feeble, the head is grey, the mouth has lost its teeth, the old man walks with a staff — yet still he does not release the bundle of his desires.
The teaching
A vivid, almost wry image: the ancient man, body failing in every way, still clutching his desires. Shankara renders this with gentle irony. The tragedy is not that we age — it is that we age without growing wise. The capacity for desire outlasts the body's capacity to fulfil it, producing only suffering.
Living this today
Illustrative example: Before buying an upgrade, write down the problem with what you already have. If you cannot name one, leave the decision for another day. This is a question to explore, not a rule against enjoyment.
