Verse (Roman transliteration)

Kurute Gangaasaagara Gamanam, Vrataparipaalanaathavaa Daanam Jnaanaviheenah Sarvamatena, Muktim Na Bhajati Janmashatena

Translation

One may go on pilgrimages to the Ganga or the sea, observe fasts and give charity — but without Self-knowledge, liberation does not come even in a hundred births.

The teaching

Rituals, philanthropy, and religious observance have value — but they are not the destination. Without the transformative clarity of self-knowledge, all external acts are like rearranging furniture in a burning house. Shankara insists that understanding — not performance — is the key.

Living this today

Illustrative example: Before sharing a charitable act online, ask whether the post will help the cause or mainly reassure you about your image. You can still share useful information, while being honest about your reasons.
