Verse (Roman transliteration)

Praanaayaama Pratyaahaara, Nityaanitya Vivekavichaara Jaapyasameta Samaadhibhiaasam, Kurvavadhaanam Mahadiha Maanas

Translation

Practise pranayama and pratyahara — withdrawal of senses. Engage in discrimination between the eternal and the transient. Along with japa, practise samadhi. Give great attention to the mind.

The teaching

A technical prescription from the yogic tradition: breath regulation, sense withdrawal, discriminative reasoning, repetitive practice, and states of meditative absorption. The instruction to "give great attention to the mind" is the central teaching — the mind itself must become the object of study.

Living this today

Illustrative example: For one piece of work, silence optional notifications and put unrelated tabs aside. Afterwards, notice what helped and what did not. This is a practical experiment, not an equation between spiritual practice and a psychological state.
